There are two main pillars of human life- man and woman. Both share equal responsibility in the making of society and hence both are supplement to each other. From the very beginning, the women in various societies of the world are exploited in many ways. Women had lower status with reference to power and influence than men in all spheres of life. A women is subjugated to her father in childhood to the husband after marriage and to her son in the old age. The traditions, customs, rituals, epics fables, superstitions, proverbs and religious teaching only confirmed this idea. Feminists have also worked to ensure access to legal abortions and social integration and to protect women and girls from rape, sexual harassment and domestic violence. The well known Indian novelist Jaishree Misra points the conflicts and sufferings of the educated women who struggle for their own self identity. Like Shashi Deshpande’s female characters, Jaishree Misra’s female protagonists are also free and independent. They overcome their struggles and break the rules. They are ready to fight against the cultural, ritual and traditional and stand on their own legs. Jaishree Misra’s first novel Ancient Promises (2000) is a semi-autobiographical one. In this work she clearly shows the sufferings of women in the male chauvinistic in the society. It is the fascinating story of the protagonist Janaki.
