India is a place where women are worshipped as goddesses and are given importance. This is the concept of the west on India. But the reality is entirely different. Right from the women in mythology to the common women in the present day scenario, women have been silenced and were not given due recognition. They were looked at mothers, wives or daughters of men. They were never given a chance to vent out their feelings and emotions. Have we ever wondered: What were the feelings of Sita when Rama deserted her? How did Draupadi feel when she was shared by five husbands? What were Kunti’s feelings when her husband married Madri? What was the reaction of Sachi devi on seeing her husband flirting with other women? Why did Amba kill herself? This is what Shashi Deshpande has done in her short stories. “The Day of the Golden Deer, Mirrors, The Inner Rooms, And What has been decided? Hear me Sanjay..” In these short stories she given a new lease of life to the eternally silent women and made them vent out their emotions. This paper discusses the feelings and emotions of the mythical women in the above short stories.India is a place where women are worshipped as goddesses and are given importance.
