Marriage to me connotes commitment and surrender, merging with, blending, over-lapping, combining. It is a symbiotic relationship where one feeds on the other, depends on the other” (Selective Memory 481). These lines were said by Shobhaa De regarding marriage in her autobiography Selective Memory. It is considered that marriage is a divine plan, in its two individuals are united in wedlock to become partners in their life; it thrives with understanding and adjustment. It is always coupled with differences and compromises, disagreement and reconciliation and debate and compromise. Keeping these in their mind, the partners strive to live together and try to promote harmony as essentially ‘nature’. It is unfortunate that this temperamental difference paves way for a man to recognise himself to be a master and his wife to be his ‘servant’. She is expected to bear the suffering without complaining. It is important to note that basically a woman is endowed with genuine qualities, like acceptance, association and affection in her domestic sphere and helps to create conducive atmosphere in her home.arriage to me connotes commitment and surrender, merging with, blending, over-lapping, combining.
