Anita Desai is unquestionably one of the celebrated Indian-English Fiction writers. She holds a unique place among the contemporary women novelists of India. The world of Desai’s fiction is largely a domestic one. Desai is more interested in her characters than in creating the environment. The Village by the Sea is Anita Desai’s first novel for children and she won the guardian award for children’s literature for The Village by the Sea in 1984. This is the only novel of Anita Desai’s which ends happily.
