Nadine Gordimer’s July’s People is a novel which stands as the best example to show her understanding of both the black and the white psyche of the South African people. The novel brings into life the transition of life in South Africa when the civil war broke out and the stage set for the active roles of both blacks and whites in their apartheid struggle. July, the protagonist of the novel becomes the symbol of power to his white masters in the time of emergency in South Africa. This could not be accepted by his conservative white master Bam who still thinks that power is theirs and no subjugation is possible. Nadine Gordimer through these two characters compares and contrasts how the blacks and whites of the apartheid era react to the change and how far they accept the change that is imminent. Keywords: Blacks and Whites, Apartheid, Power, Struggle, change.
