The book shows that the human condition is pathetic and it is useless to set it right. The children in the novel are a symbol of humanity. They are faced with strong political and other forces, which shatter their illusions, alienate them, and finally exterminate them. Saleem is a symbol of the human spirit and he moves away to the privacy of a retired life. He has acquiesced to the demands of politics. He has lost all moral courage and his individuality has been quashed. He is no longer an integrated personality.
