This paper presents the spelling problems in English. Many ventures in spelling reforms were made long before the invention of printing. Our spelling is just one of the things we must accept and adjust to. Anyone who has been taught to read by phonetics or by any other sound system may err. Each student should keep the record of all the words which cause him trouble and find some solutions with the help of his teacher. The best way to remember the spelling is to drill the correct spelling. English spelling was established four hundred years ago on a basis of practices which were already archaic. The spelling difficulties which arise from the nature of the spelling system are classified into six categories. This paper attempts to highlight the spelling problems and some practices consistent in them. This paper will be a boon to the English language learners to learn the practices in English spelling. Keywords: Phonetics (Vocal sounds), Archaic (primitive, ancient), ventures (undertaking) Findings: 1. Spelling is one of the essentials of writing. 2. Spelling errors are particularly noticeable in vowel sounds. 3. Many Americans pronounce all unstressed vowels alike i.e. phonetically alike. 4. This indicates that over application of spelling rules and over generalization are the factors for spelling errors. 5. Learners are not aware of their problems and the difficulties they find in writing English sounds.
